According to the latest data from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the UK had more than 17.1GW of solar installed capacity by the end of September 2024. From the beginning of 2024 to the end of September, DESNZ recorded 426MW of new domestic photovoltaic installed capacity. This is a decrease from 540MW in the same period of 2023. It is reported that the total number of new installations in the first nine months of 2024 was 107,316, compared with 132,989 at the end of September last year.
From a utility scale, projects over 50MW are continuing to grow in the UK. In September 2024, the 600MW Cottam solar project received special approval from the government. This is the fourth consent order for a major solar project approved by the UK government since the general election in July 2024.
In July this year, the 350MW Mallard Pass power plant, the 500MW Gate Burton Energy Park and the 500MW Sunnica project were all approved by the Minister of Energy Security and Net Zero. DESNZ expects to make a planning consent decision for the 480MW West Burton solar project proposed by Cottam solar project developer Island Green Power in November 2024.
